Daisetsuzan National Park

Mountains, flowers and hot springs in the heart of Hokkaido.

About Daisetsuzan National Park
Daisetzuan National Park is a large scenic area in the middle of Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido. The area offers many great experiences and the best way to get to them all is by car. We can of course help with car rental.

Wonderful summer scenery far from the typical Japanese bustle
In the national park there are many idyllic hiking trails, and since this is far up north, the foliage changes to beautiful autumn colours as early as September. One of the main attractions is Mount Asahidake, Hokkaido's highest mountain (2290 meters). At the foot of the mountain lies the small town of Asahidake Onsen. From here you can take a ride with the Asahidake Ropeway up the mountain to a height of about 1600 meters. You can continue on foot to the top of the mountain (takes about two hours) or just choose to follow the path that takes you around the mountain before riding down again. It takes approx. 30-60 minutes to walk around the mountain and along the road. Asahidake Onsen is also a good base if you want to live in the area. Here are many ryokan (Japanese guest houses) where you live and dine in traditional ways and bathe in naturally hot springs.

Other landmarks in Daisetsuzan National Park
There are many experiences within a manageable driving distance. You can drive to Furano which offers brightly coloured flower fields in the summer. Take a stroll past Farm Tomita and let yourself be fascinated by the vast lavender fields that colour the entire land purple. They usually bloom in June and July. Another half an hour away you will find the town of Biei with Lake Aoiike. This incredibly clear and blue lake, which has been used as a background on Apple computers, has an almost extravagant mystery and beauty. Another nice visit is Asahikawa, Hokkaido's second-largest city after Sapporo. The town has some nice restaurant streets, where you can try the local version of noodles, Asahikawa Ramen. In addition, it has one of Japan's most popular zoos, the Asahiyama Zoo. Here you can see many of Hokkaido's wild animal species and it is a great place for the whole family. With the help of innovative architecture, you can get very close to the animals in a safe way.
