Overview

Experience the wild beauty of Rausu on a thrilling sea cruise to spot whales, dolphins, and seabirds

Set sail on an unforgettable wildlife cruise in northern Hokkaido’s Rausu, the gateway to Shiretoko National Park. This scenic adventure offers a rare chance to witness majestic sperm whales, agile killer whales, playful dolphins, and flocks of shearwaters soaring against the backdrop of the Shiretoko Mountain Range and neighbouring Kunashir Island.

Led by experienced guides, the cruise offers insights into the marine life of the northern Pacific. Listen for the powerful spout of a surfacing whale, watch pods of dolphins dance through the waves, and marvel at the unspoiled beauty of Japan’s easternmost wilderness. While sightings can differ each time, each cruise is a unique journey into nature’s wonders.

Dress warmly, as the sea breeze can be chilly even in summer, and prepare for a one-of-a-kind marine wildlife experience you’ll never forget.

Itinerary

8:30

Arrive at the Rausu Port designated meeting point at least 30 minutes before departure. Here, you will receive a short safety briefing and an introduction to the wildlife you may encounter.

At 9:00, the cruise will set sail, navigating the pristine waters off the coast of Hokkaido. The crew will scan the horizon, searching for signs of marine life.

As the boat ventures into deeper waters, listen for the call of seabirds and the telltale blow of whales and dolphins surfacing. The guide will provide fascinating details about the whales, dolphins, and birds seen along the way.

Please note that depending on the season and the weather, the wildlife you may encounter will be different.

On the cruise, you can also enjoy panoramic views of the Shiretoko Peninsula, a designated National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. If conditions allow, you may also glimpse the neighbouring Kunashir Island.

11:30

The cruise ends back at the port. While sightings may differ by occasion, each journey offers an intimate experience with Japan’s wild and rugged nature.
