Tokyo
Neon, crowds and all of Japan's extremes.
About Tokyo
Tokyo is the world's most populous metropolis with over 35 million people. The city offers nothing less than an endless array of experiences and it is a remarkably clean and safe city with an impressive transport system. Tokyo City itself is where most of the sights are. This area has 14 million inhabitants and spreads out over 2000 km². If you focus on one or two neighbourhoods per day, you can really see a lot in even a short time in Tokyo, as the city has an extremely well-functioning and efficient transport network. However, you still must keep in mind the extra time that it takes moving through huge crowds of people and gigantic stations.
Scenic temple areas, neon-lit crowds and everything in between
Japan's capital is full of contrasts. Do not miss the chance to see the sprawling city from above from one of its many towers. The tallest one is Tokyo Skytree, but the Metropolitan Government Building offers great views too, and it’s free. In the neon areas around Shinjuku and Shibuya, the city never sleeps, and here you can shop and find a meal around the clock. The area around Ueno Park and Asakusa Temple with its associated Nakamise market is more reminiscent of old downtown Tokyo. Harajuku Station is home to the contrasts of both the beautiful and serene Meiji Shrine as well as the busy and youthful Takeshita Street, where teens walk around wearing the most outrageous fashion. And then there is Ginza, the fashionable shopping district just a stone's throw away from the secretive and closed-off Imperial Palace. Those interested in architecture should visit Roppongi and Tokyo Midtown, sushi lovers shouldn’t miss the Tsukiji fish market, and for fans of manga or electronics, there is Akihabara. Anime fans should take the train and visit the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka – but please note that that museum can only be visited if you have purchased tickets well in advance!
