Overview

Step into Kyoto’s elegance with a tea ceremony in kimono at a historic townhouse

Discover the grace and depth of Japanese tradition with a tea ceremony in the heart of Kyoto. At our Kyoto Tea Ceremony and Kimono Experience, you'll be warmly welcomed into a registered cultural property — a beautifully preserved machiya townhouse.

Begin your journey by selecting and dressing in an elegant kimono, with hairstyling available for ladies. Then, take part in an authentic tea ceremony led by a tea master and an English-speaking guide, where you’ll learn the meaning behind each gesture, tool, and sip.

Savour seasonal wagashi sweets, experience the calming atmosphere of Zen philosophy, and create your own perfect bowl of matcha. A refined, unforgettable encounter with Kyoto’s cultural essence awaits.

Suggested itinerary

10:00

Arrive a few minutes early at the traditional machiya townhouse located in central Kyoto. Our friendly English-speaking staff will greet you and explain the flow of the experience.

Select your favourite kimono from a wide range of styles and colours. Ladies can also enjoy a traditional hairstyle service, ensuring you look your best for the tea ceremony.

Once you are dressed, you’ll enter the tea room to begin the ceremony. The tea master will guide you through the ritual, explaining each step, utensil, and its cultural significance. This immersive session highlights the Zen values of wa, kei, sei, and jaku—harmony, respect, purity, and tranquillity.

Enjoy a hands-on moment as you whisk your own bowl of matcha using premium green tea powder, and savour the freshly prepared tea with traditional seasonal wagashi sweets, beautifully presented and varying by season.

11:30

After the ceremony, you’ll have the time to capture these timeless memories in Maikoya’s private Japanese garden and tea room backdrops. You’re welcome to take photos in your kimono.

When you’re finished, get dressed back, and continue exploring Kyoto. You can visit nearby landmarks such as Nishiki Market, Kamo River, or the Gion District—all within walking distance.
