Overview

Heritage, modern history and island life – all in one day.

If you are looking for a perfect day excursion from Kyoto, a visit to Hiroshima and Miyajima is a must-add to your Japan travel bucket list. This full-day tour combines a mix of World Heritage Sites, insight into Japanese history and culture, and a relaxed excursion to the picturesque Miyajima Island with the famous ‘floating’ torii gate.

Suggested itinerary

The tour departs from Kyoto Station, and guests will take the lighting-fast Nozomi or Hikari Shinkansen (bullet train) (with reserved seating). Upon arriving at Hiroshima Station, you'll walk over to Hotel Granvia Hiroshima, located a stone’s throw away.

At Hotel Granvia Hiroshima, your private coach/minivan will take you from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi, where you will board the ferry to Miyajima.

Also known as 'Shrine Island', Miyajima is most famous for its shinden-zukuri style shrine, which was established in the 6th century. The Shinto shrine and the torii gate are uniquely built over water, creating the illusion that they're floating during high tide.

You will spend two hours on the island, where you will be able to visit Itsukushima Shrine, the torii gate, and meet friendly, free-roaming deer who live on the island. The lacquered shrine pavilion by the blue Seto sea with the contrasting lush landscape of Mount Misen make for an unforgettable view.

Lunch is not included so feel free to choose a spot to eat on the island before departing to Hiroshima.

After lunch you will take the ferry from Miyajima Port to Miyajimaguchi Station, where a private bus will take you to the Peace Memorial Park.

This large-scale park was established in 1949 after the Pacific War ended as a dedication to the city's nuclear bomb attack victims. It was built as a way to educate future generations of the repercussions of the atomic bombing.

Despite its devastating history, the park serves as a bright and lively symbol of World Peace.

The Atomic Bomb Dome is a symbol of the disastrous atomic bombing during WWII, the first atomic bomb used in human history. The building was the hypocentre of the nuclear bomb; however, despite being located almost directly underneath the explosion, the building still stands today. This World Heritage Site has been preserved as a relic to promote peace and educate on the history of suffering caused by war and nuclear weapons. The visit is a powerful reminder of the impacts of war and the inspiring potential of resilience.

Take the Nozomi/Hikari Shinkansen from Hiroshima Station, heading back to Kyoto Station.

From Kyoto Station you are free to enjoy the rest of the evening in the city or return to your accommodation.
