Overview
See Tokyo’s icons in one seamless morning – palace gardens, skyline views, and Asakusa tradition.
Then, continue to Tokyo Tower’s Main Deck at 150 m for a clean sweep of the skyline, and cross town to Asakusa to meet Senso-ji, the city’s oldest temple. Explore temple grounds, browse the historic Nakamise shopping street, and feel Tokyo’s traditional side come to life.
A licensed English-speaking guide brings context to every stop – history, customs, and everyday life – so you leave oriented, inspired, and ready to explore more on your own. The tour finishes near Tokyo Station around lunchtime.
Suggested itinerary
Arrive at the bus boarding area near Shinjuku Station East Exit at least 10 minutes before departure. Staff assist with check-in, and your English-speaking guide outlines the route and timing for the morning.
Settle in as the bus eases into central Tokyo. Your guide shares a concise introduction to the city’s districts and points out landmarks as you travel.
At 9:00, a brief stop is made to board additional guests at Tokyo Station. Enjoy a drive through Marunouchi’s red-brick and glass architecture before continuing.
Walk the broad paths of the palace plaza, where moat waters reflect stone ramparts and pines. Frame the elegant Nijubashi Bridge and learn how the site evolved from shogunate castle to the modern Imperial residence.
Continuing your journey, from the coach, see the stately National Diet Building – an emblematic Showa-era landmark with a stepped pyramid tower and Japanese imperial motifs (chrysanthemum and paulownia) worked into its design. Your guide outlines how Japan’s bicameral parliament functions and how laws are passed.
Rising 333 m over Shiba Park since 1958, Tokyo Tower is a symbol of the city’s postwar optimism – painted international orange and white for aviation safety and long a beacon for TV and radio.
Ride up to the Main Deck for a 360° panorama: trace the Hamarikyu Gardens and Tokyo Bay, pick out Tokyo Skytree, and read the city’s layers from temple precincts at Zojo-ji to the high-rises of Roppongi and Marunouchi. On exceptionally clear days, you may even glimpse Mt. Fuji on the horizon. Time is set aside for photos and unhurried viewing.
Cross the city with commentary on everyday Tokyo life, and learn how Asakusa’s calendar revolves around Senso-ji, from the thunderous Sanja Matsuri in May to New Year’s first prayers, and get tips on regional snacks to try – ningyō-yaki sponge cakes, kaminari-okoshi rice crisps, and hand-grilled senbei.
Pass beneath the huge red lantern of Kaminarimon Gate and follow the 250-metre Nakamise arcade, a ribbon of stalls selling paper fans, tenugui cloths, ukiyo-e prints, and warm street treats fresh off the griddle.
At the main temple, cleanse your hands at the basin, breathe the sweet curl of incense, and watch worshippers offer coins and prayers beneath the five-storied pagoda. Try drawing an omikuji fortune – your guide explains the how-to – and use your free time to explore side alleys, sample a snack, or photograph the temple roofs against the modern skyline.
In the end of your tour, return toward Tokyo Station via Kabukiza’s classic façade and Ginza’s refined avenues, with tips for dining and shopping later in the day.
The bus will disembark near Tokyo Station, from where you can continue your day exploring Tokyo.
