Since October 2022, Japan is completely open to most visitors without the need for a visa. Furthermore, as of May 8, 2023, there are no more Covid-related vaccination requirements. Keep reading to learn more!

Can I travel to Japan now?

Yes, since the 11th of October 2022, Japan has reopened and has been welcoming tourists from low-risk "blue" countries who are able to travel to the country without requiring a visa in advance. As of May 8, 2023, there are no longer any Covid-19 vaccination requirements or color-coded countries for entry into Japan. Everything has returned to pre-Covid entry requirements.

Currently, all the countries we serve (UK, Italy, Spain, France, Netherlands, Hungary and Denmark) will be able to enter Japan without restrictions.

What is required to travel to Japan now?

  • There are no specific requirments to travel to Japan, except a valid passport and a visa waiver agreement in between Japan and your country, as is the case for UK, Italy, Spain, France, Netherlands, Hungary and Denmark. Being vaccinated against Covid-19 is not a requirement to enter Japan. Regardless of vaccination status, Covid-related pre-departure tests are not required as of May 8, 2023.
     
  • To ensure a smooth arrival in Japan, we recommend registering on the Visit Japan Web at least 6 hours before your scheduled arrival time.
     
  • Travel insurance that covers Covid-related medical expenses is not necessary as of the May 8, 2023.

Do I need a Covid-19 vaccine to travel to Japan?

Being vaccinated against Covid-19 is not a requirement to enter Japan.

Do I need a Covid-19 PCR test before departure?

Regardless of vaccination status, Covid-related pre-departure tests are not required as of May 8, 2023.

What do I have to do once I arrive in Japan?

Life in Japan has returned to normality, with restaurants and tourist attractions warmly receiving visitors.

Initially, the Japanese government introduced etiquette guidelines that encouraged widespread mask usage among both tourists and locals. However, there has been a shift towards a more relaxed and individualized approach. While not everyone will be wearing masks, many people still choose to do so. Hand sanitizer is readily available in public spaces, and you may also notice floor markers in shops and stores encouraging social distancing. Additionally, some entrances have digital thermometers, although these measures, initially introduced during the height of the pandemic, are no longer strictly enforced.

Do I need to wear a mask in Japan?

You don't have to wear a mask while in Japan. It is recommended by the government to wear one in crowded public transportation and medical facilities. Mask-wearing in Japan, even before Covid, was common, and you may find that many Japanese people still do it.

Can I travel anywhere in Japan?

Yes – you can. There are no restrictions.

Can I take public transport in Japan?

Yes – you can. Wearing a mask is advised at crowded times.
